eSIM EID vs ICCID Explained

Updated May 2026

EID and ICCID are both used in SIM and eSIM workflows, but they refer to different identifiers and appear at different stages of support, inventory, and activation processes.

Teams that work with eSIM onboarding, device provisioning, or mobile support often need a simple explanation of what each value represents and when each one should be validated.

What the EID identifies

The EID is a long identifier associated with the eUICC hardware itself. It is tied to the embedded SIM component rather than to a single profile or line assignment.

In practice, EIDs appear in device enrollment, eSIM provisioning preparation, and telecom support documentation for eSIM-capable hardware.

What the ICCID identifies

The ICCID identifies a SIM or profile record and is commonly seen in SIM inventory, activation flows, and account-level telecom operations.

It often shows up in billing systems, support tools, and activation paperwork where a specific SIM or eSIM profile reference is required.

Why support teams need both

Support teams need to know whether a workflow is asking for the device-side eUICC identifier or the SIM/profile-side identifier. Mixing them up creates confusion in tickets, QA cases, and onboarding forms.

This is especially relevant when building product documentation, validating inputs, or designing telecom tools around eSIM support.
